Is Floyd Mayweather Jnr’s reign coming to an end?

Despite bringing the world’s most controversial sport back into the limelight for the completely wrong reasons, Mexican fighter Marcos Maidana’s performance against the holder of the WBA Super,WBC and The Ring  Welterweight titles Floyd Mayweather, Jr, showed how the champions days could be numbered at the top, despite a possible super-fight with Manny Pacquiao to come up next.

The rematch between Maidana and Mayweather saw the latter win by a majority vote for the second time between the two, leading to questions about whether Mayweather was still the best around. Glimpses of his genius began to show after a considerably nervy start by champion, but he couldn’t do enough to finish the contest before the end of the 12th round and was left holding his breath, hoping for the decision to go in his favour.

It is believed though that Mayweather had been fighting the last few rounds with an injured hand after being bitten by Maidana. The Mexican was quick to deny this once the fight was over, despite that he and his team were the only ones who believed this was case. Mayweather speaking on the bite said that characters like Maidana “belonged in the MMA”, and this is the most publicised biting incident in boxing since Mike Tyson bit Evander Holyfield back in 1998.

Mayweather who himself has a chequered history has already confirmed that he plans to retire in 2015, so with his career coming to a close, rumours regarding a fight with Manny Pacquiao have come back to life.

Back in December 2013, Mayweather promised Amir Khan a fight after months of Khan saying that he was ready to fight the best, but as 1 year isn’t very long in a boxing career especially, Mayweather is unlikely to fight more than once if his retirement is to happen. He looks to be attempting to end his career with one more super-fight, and if this is to happen then it looks like Khan will surely be out of luck.

If Mayweather vs Pacquiao is to materialise, then Mayweather is running the risk of ending his career with a title defeat. In his past few fights he has certainly been pushing his luck at times, and if he is to have a fight with someone of Pacquiao’s calibre then he will more than likely have to fight better than he ever has before.
